The 21st Century promises to be Flea Famous
When the deep south has a mild winter along with good rainfall outdoor fleas begin to wake up all over your yard. If you have family pets or spend lots of time in your yard, you may need outdoor flea control. See below for a quick outdoor flea treatment summary and product recommendation. To achieve exterior flea control your lawn grass should not be more than 3 inches high. If higher you will have to use more insecticide, so you may want to take this opportunity to trim it down with your lawn mower.
You will need to remove pets and children from any treating areas. Spray so that you don’t have to walk through the treated areas or wear rubber boots. A pair of Nitrile Chemical resistant gloves would be beneficial also.
Outdoor Flea Eradication Treatment
We have been getting rid of fleas for years, some treatments worked and some didn’t. I’m going to describe an outdoor flea control treatment that has been getting the best results.
You will need at least a sprayer capable of spraying insecticides to do outside flea control. If you have a really big yard you could use a backpack sprayer. The first product I suggest is a liquid flea adulticide called Tengard S.F.R. It is inexpensive and comes in a quart bottle and a five-quart jug. For small to medium size yards, you will be fine with the 1-quart bottle of Tengard SFR . This bottle will treat approximately 32,000 square feet. So you should have enough to do several treatments if needed. The Tengard SFR will kill the adult fleas immediately. The flea eggs will not be affected so we will use an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) along with the Tengard SFR to destroy the flea’s ability to reproduce. The IGR coats the eggs and when they hatch the baby fleas will be sterile. A follow-up treatment should be made 10-20 days after the first treatment to ensure the fleas are totally eliminated.
Outdoor Flea Control Tengard S.F.R.
Mix 0.4 to 0.8 fluid ounce of Tengard SFR in 4 to 25 gallons of water per 1,000 square feet. Use the higher rate for fast knockdown and increased residual control. Dense or excessive (greater than 3 inches) lawn height and arid conditions may require higher volume application rates. If you are making this treatment on a regular basis it would be handy to purchase a four-gallon backpack sprayer.
Outdoor Flea Control Archer IGR
Add 1-2 ounces of Archer IGR to each gallon of water used. One 16-oz. bottle of Archer will treat 8,000 to 16,000 SQ. ft. Wear chemical resistant gloves when mixing this product! Archer Insect Growth Regulator is solar-stable for up to 14 days, delivering effective residual control of outdoor pests such as fleas and cockroaches, even in areas with direct sunlight.
Archer Insect Growth Regulator may be combined with other insecticides to enhance control of adult insects, such as Demand® CS, Prelude®, Demon® WP or Tengard SFR insecticides. The combination provides for immediate control of adult fleas, cockroaches, crickets, and flying insects while inhibiting the development of the immature stages of the pest insect. This application should conform to use precautions and use directions for both products.
Archer Insect Growth Regulator acts on immature stages of fleas, ticks, and beetles to prevent the development of adults. Archer Insect Growth Regulator causes a gradual reduction and final elimination of the pest population by breaking the reproductive cycle by stopping the development of immature pest stages. Archer Insect Growth Regulator prevents the laying of viable eggs, affects the molting of flea larvae, and prevents normal pupae development into adult fleas. Archer Insect Growth Regulator can sterilize adult female fleas and can control adults by disruption of the reproductive organs.
If a high population of adult fleas, ticks, or carpet beetles is present, the use of an adulticide may be necessary for immediate control. Archer Insect Growth Regulator may be combined with flea adulticides such as Prelude insecticide indoors, or Demand CS, or Demon WP or Tengard SFR insecticide products outdoors. Archer Insect Growth Regulator complements the rapid activity of an adulticide by providing long-term control of pre-adult fleas for up to 7 months before they develop into biting adults. This application should conform to use precautions and directions for both products.
*Do not allow adults, children, or pets to contact treated surfaces until area treated has completely dried.(I recommend 4 hours of drying time)
